WHAT IS SEPTUM DEVIATION?

Septum deviation is a situation where breathing becomes difficult due to the curvature of the bone and cartilage structure in the nose, and in some cases, it becomes impossible to breathe when the nostrils are completely closed.

Septum deviation usually occurs due to physical traumas (hit, fall, etc.), and in some cases, it may occur during the process in the mother’s womb or due to genetic reasons.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SEPTUM DEVIATION? WHAT PROBLEMS OCCUR?

Nasal congestion, which is the most prominent symptom of septum deviation, causes breathing difficulties. Some people with mild septum deviation develop symptoms during a cold.

Caused by septum deviation health The problems can be listed as follows:

– Unilateral or bilateral nasal congestion
– Horlama ya da apne
– Obstruction in the Eustachian tube
– Fluid accumulation in the ear
– Postnasal drip
– Headache
– Recurrent nosebleeds
– Recurrent or prolonged pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis diseases.

HOW IS SEPTUM DEVIATION TREATED?

The curvature of the nasal septum, which should be thin and straight due to its normal structure, can make breathing difficult or impossible. If the curvature of the septum is curved or incorrectly positioned to cause nasal congestion, surgical intervention is performed. Surgery that corrects the curvature of the cartilage and bone tissue in the midline of the nose is called septoplasty.

WHEN IS DEVIATION SURGERY RECOMMENDED? HOW IS A DEVIATION SURGERY PERFORMED?

The deviation significantly narrows the nasal passage. If the patient has significant nasal obstruction, surgery is recommended. The operation is usually performed after the development of the nose is completed, that is, after the age of 18. However, in some selected cases, the operation can be performed at an earlier age.

The operation can be performed in any season. It is not recommended to be done during allergy season in allergic patients. Deviation and turbinate enlargement (nasal meatus) surgeries can be applied together. This does not cause a prolongation of the recovery period. In all nose surgeries, endoscope is commonly used instead of direct eye surgery and operations are performed with endoscope.
