With climate change, global warming and the increase in the number of sunny days, exposure to the sun is increasing, especially in summer.

The “protection” warning, which is often made by experts about the effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays on the skin, directs citizens to use sunscreen in particular.

While the most effective method of protection from the harmful rays of the sun is sunscreen, there has been an increase in the cases of skin blemishes and skin cancers, especially in recent years.

At a hotel in Antalya, Akdeniz University (AU) Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan, Faculty Member of Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan drew attention to the increase in skin cancer cases at the meeting, and said that the skin, which is the organ and tissue that occupies the most space, is not given enough attention.

Stating that the skin is important in terms of vital signs apart from beauty, Prof. Dr. Özkan said, “When you encounter a cancer, you do the most important treatment in the early period. Some skin cancers are preventable cancers. We’re facing ultraviolet problems like we’ve never encountered before.” said.

“WE HAVE SKIN CANCER PATIENT AT 3 YEARS OLD”

Explaining that there were cases where they encountered skin cancer at a young age, and that he diagnosed a case in his own clinic, Prof. Dr. Özkan said, “Unfortunately, there are those who come very late. There are also early arrivals. We had a 3 year old patient. Unfortunately, this is one of the youngest ages that can be seen in the literature. Tumors of this type work on a knife-edge. With millimeters, what we say about cancer changes. While that patient is 99 percent alive under 1 millimeter thickness, it decreases to 25 percent when it is 4 millimeters.” he said.

“THE SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN NUMBERS”

Cancer Stating that the increase in the number of cases was noticed with the data, Prof. Dr. Özkan said that increasing people’s awareness may also be a factor in this. Stating that cancer cases were less common in previous years, Prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan said, “Out of the cancer cases we see once a month, we saw 3 cases this week, this number is an important type of cancer. The numbers are increasing, I would say the numbers have increased markedly.” he said.

“EXAMINATION AFTER A certain AGE IS IMPORTANT”

Explaining that they encountered cancer cases not only in the sun-exposed parts of the skin, but also in other regions, Prof. Dr. Özkan said that sunlight is not the only cause of skin cancer.

Expressing that skin cancer can be caused by UV in sun-exposed areas, immunity, weather conditions, additional diseases and genetic factors are effective in places that are not exposed to the sun. Dr. Ozkan said:

“Cancer can be seen on the body, in the mouth, in the eyes, and in areas where there are underwear that are hardly exposed to the sun. If you have a mole before and it grows, its shape changes, bleeding, itching has started, different colors are seen in it, these are important findings. After a certain age, examination is very important. If you look at your body and see something different from the other, this is also very important. UV is effective on some skin cancers and some less effective. We’re talking about UV because it’s a simple and preventable cause.”
