A study conducted in the United States compared the health effects of indoor gas cooking and passive (cigarette) smoking.

Accordingly, gas cooking was associated with 12.7 percent of all childhood asthma cases in the United States.

According to the news of Euronews Turkish, the results support the calls of many officials, including US Energy Minister Jennifer Granholm, to use electric or induction cookers for a long time.

However, the data released brought harsh criticism from the gas lobby.

Gas cookers are present in about 35 percent of kitchens in the United States.

Previous research has revealed that these stoves have higher nitrogen dioxide levels, which is linked to higher rates of asthma.

INCREASES INCREASES OF ASTHMA

The peer-reviewed study, published last month in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, was spearheaded by the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a think tank known for its environmental activities.

“The findings suggest that approximately 650,000 children in the United States would not have asthma if they were not exposed to gas stoves,” said data scientist Talor Gruenwald of the electrification advocacy group Rewiring America, the study’s lead author.

Gruenwald, pointing out that the risk of asthma from secondhand smoke is similar, “Using a gas stove is very similar to having a smoker living in your home.”

A 2018 study in Australia revealed that 12.3 percent of childhood asthma was associated with gas stoves.

According to the World Health Organization data, it is estimated that 262 million people worldwide have asthma, and more than 400 thousand people die from asthma every year in the world. Globally, 455,000 people died in 2019 due to asthma.

Meanwhile, the incidence of asthma, which is considered among non-communicable diseases and is one of the most common diseases in Turkey, is increasing.

Recent studies indicate that there are over 4 million asthma patients in Turkey, that is, the disease is seen in five out of every 100 people.
