There are a few things you can do to prepare your feet for the sandals you’ll be wearing this summer and keep them in good shape all winter long.

Dry skin on the heels can be caused by:

  • The age : As we age, our skin changes. Accumulation of sun damage, reduced oil production and reduced skin thickness contribute to dry skin — on our feet and elsewhere.
  • Some trauma : Your skin can become dry as a result of repeated friction from scrubbing and constant exposure to harsh environments such as dry climates.
  • Lack of maintenance : You may be neglecting your heels while you are treating and moisturizing the rest of your body.

Sometimes, however, dry skin can be a sign of a more serious underlying condition such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, a fungal infection, or nutritional deficiencies. And in some cases, dry, cracked skin on the heels it could mean diabetes .

If you are dealing with an underlying condition, it is best to seek treatment from your doctor, rather than trying to get rid of dry skin on your own.

Treatments to help heal cracked heels

1. Wash your feet daily using water that is not too hot. lukewarm is best. Being careful not to scrub, use a mild, unscented soap. You can soak them if you want but only for a few minutes.

2. Moisturize your feet: After you shower, dry your feet and apply lotion or cream.

3. Lock in moisture: After applying lotion, allow a few minutes for it to absorb.

4. Wear socks to bed: At least for a few nights. Wear thin, 100% cotton socks to keep your feet moist while you sleep.
