Testosterone levels appear to be significantly linked to the type of relationships and sexual behavior of both men and women, according to a new British scientific study. This is the most comprehensive study to date of how this hormone affects the two sexes differently. The bottom line is that it drives men to multiple partners, but not the same for women who have a lot of testosterone.
Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the University of Manchester and the UK’s National Center for Social Research, who published in The Journal of Sex Research, measured testosterone in saliva samples. of nearly 4,000 18- to 74-year-olds of both sexes, who were then asked to answer a detailed questionnaire about their sexuality expression.
Until now, testosterone has been considered primarily a biological driving force behind male sexual desire, while its corresponding role in female sexuality is not well understood. The new study comes to somewhat cover this “deficit”.
It found that men with higher levels of the hormone were more likely (than women) to have had more than one sexual partner at the same time in the past five years, as well as to have more frequent heterosexual intercourse.
On the other hand, testosterone levels were significantly higher in women who either had sex with another woman, or reported more frequent “solo” sexual activity (self-gratification). More generally, a stronger relationship was found in women than in men between high levels of the hormone and self-satisfaction, rather than sexual contact with a partner.
