Sylvie Nzeyimana, Minister of Public Health of Burundi, said in a statement that cholera cases were detected in 12 people who applied to the hospital with complaints of diarrhea and vomiting in the Bukirasazi district in the north of Bujumbura.

Stating that the cases were people in contact with each other, Nzeyimana announced that they had declared a cholera epidemic in Bujumbura.

angry It is estimated that the epidemic was caused by the overflowing sewers after heavy rains in and around Bujumbura on December 26-31.

WHAT IS COLERA?

Cholera, a food and water-borne disease caused by the “Vibrio” bacteria, causes severe diarrhea and dehydration in the body. The disease can be fatal if left untreated.

The inability to meet the need for clean water in Burundi and the inability to provide immediate and effective medical intervention increases the risk of disease and death.

Epidemics such as malaria, polio and typhoid virus are frequently encountered in the country.
