A field hospital is a temporary military hospital or mobile health unit where patients receive on-site intervention before being transferred to a more equipped hospital.

This term was first used in military medicine, then it began to be used in disaster and similar serious civilian situations.

A field hospital usually consists of medical staff and tent-like (or inflatable) buildings with portable equipment for on-site response.

Field hospitals established in cities are usually located in easily accessible and visible buildings.

In airborne field hospitals, medical equipment is often placed inside a container that acts as a shelter.

In military terms, a field hospital is larger than a temporary aid station and smaller than a military hospital.
