At least 30 children have died in the UK since 19 September due to the infection caused by the ‘Strep A’ bacteria.
According to the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) data, a total of 122 people died due to the bacterial infection “Strep A”.
Illness At least 30 children under the age of 18 have lost their lives since 19 September.
During the 2017-2018 period, 355 people, 27 of whom were under the age of 18, died due to “Strep A” bacteria.
DISEASE INCREASED COMPARED TO PREVIOUS YEARS
UKHSA, in a statement on 6 December, warned families to be careful against infection and pointed out that the incidence of the disease treated with antibiotics is higher than in previous years.
The agency estimated that the increase was most likely due to high circulation of the bacteria in the community.
WHAT IS STREP A?
Strep A or Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a type of bacteria found in the throat and skin and does not cause any symptoms in most people. However, it can cause different diseases in the nose, throat and lungs.
Symptoms of Strep A include pain when swallowing, fever, swollen tonsils with white spots, swollen neck glands, high fever or skin rash.
Strep A can also cause any of the following:
-Tonsillitis
-Farenjit
-Red
Skin infections such as impetigo or erysipelas
-Cellulite
-Pneumonia
Most cases of throat infections get better on their own without treatment. Skin infections may require antibiotics. However, Strep A can also cause very serious infections, sometimes known as invasive GAS (iGAS).
The disease, which has not yet been encountered in Turkey, is causing global concern.
WHAT ARE STREP A SYMPTOMS?
“Strep A” bacteria is known to settle in people’s throat and skin, often causing colds and sore throat from time to time.
Bacteria that cause rashes and skin infections in some parts of the body can lead to serious complications and death in some cases.
The bacteria that cause the disease can easily spread between people through sneezing, coughing and close contact.
