Stress

Stress at work, at home or in relationships can happen to anyone. Learning how to handle it in a healthy way really helps. You can do a lot on your own, and a counselor or doctor can also help.

Partner problems

Problems with your partner are among the top causes that reduce sex drive. Watch out for the fallout from fights, miscommunication, feelings of betrayal, or other trust issues. If it’s hard to get back on track, see a couples counselor.

Alcohol

A drink can make you feel more open to sex. But too much alcohol can numb your sex drive. Being drunk can also be a turn off for your partner. If you are struggling to drink less, seek help.

Too little sleep

If your sex drive is gone, you may not be getting enough sleep. Do you go to bed too late or get up too early? Do you have a sleep problem such as difficulty falling or staying asleep or a condition such as sleep apnea? Anything that messes with a good night’s rest can be messed with with sex. Feeling sexy is easier if you like the way you look. Work on accepting your body as it is today, even if you’re trying to get in shape. Feeling good about yourself can lift your spirits. If your partner has low self-esteem, reassure them that they are hot.

Obesity

When you are overweight or obese, the desire often weakens. It could be that you don’t enjoy sex, you can’t perform the way you want, or you’re held back by low self-esteem. Working through how you feel about yourself, with a counselor if needed, can make a big difference.

Erection problems

Men with ED (erectile dysfunction) often worry about how they will be able to perform sexually, and this worry can sap their desire. ED can be treated and couples can also work to keep it from affecting their relationship.

Low testosterone

The “T” hormone, testosterone, fuels the sex drive. As men age, T levels may drop a bit. Not everyone loses the desire for sex like this, but some do. Many other things — from relationships to weight — also affect a man’s sex drive and testosterone levels, so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Depression

Depression can stop pleasure in many things, including sex. This is one of many reasons to get help. If your treatment includes medication, tell your doctor if your sex drive is low, as some (but not all) depression medications lower sex drive. Talk to your therapist about this as well.

Menopause

For many women, sex drive declines during menopause. This is partly about symptoms such as vaginal dryness and pain during sex. But every woman is different and you are likely to have a great sex life after menopausetaking care of your relationship, self-esteem and overall health.

Lack of proximity

Sex without feeling close can kill desire. Intimacy is more than sex. If your sex life is inactive, try spending more non-sexual time together, just the two of you. Talk, cuddle, exchange massages. Find ways to express it lovewithout having sex. Getting closer can rebuild your sex drive.
